The EPA’s SmartWay Excellence Award recognizes exceptional achievement in freight performance among partners of the agency’s voluntary efficient transport initiative. This year’s recipients include UPS, Old Dominion Freight Line, Whirlpool, Lowe’s Companies, Johnson & Johnson, and Kimberly-Clark.
Awardees are chosen from more than 3,700 companies and organizations that participate in SmartWay, an initiative that aims to empower businesses to move goods in the cleanest, most energy-efficient way possible.
“Since 2004, SmartWay partners have avoided emitting more than 103 million metric tons of harmful air pollution while saving more than 215 million barrels of oil and $29.7 billion in fuel costs,” according to the EPA.
The 2018 award was given to 12 shipping companies, which includes retailers and manufacturers, and two logistics companies. In addition, 40 truck carriers received SmartWay Excellence Awards for leadership in supply chain environmental and energy efficiency.
The 2018 SmartWay Freight Shipper and Logistics Excellence Award recipients are Armada, Bacardi USA, General Motors North America, HP, Johnson & Johnson, Kimberly-Clark Corporation, LEDVANCE, Lowe’s Companies, Medtronic, Meijer, Microsoft, Nordstrom, Transplace, and Whirlpool Corporation.
Winning freight carriers move more goods with less fuel, said EPA Office of Air and Radiation assistant administrator Bill Wehrum. “These companies inspire others in the freight sector to invest in innovative technologies and business practices that save fuel, cut costs and protect the environment.”
UPS Small Package was among the freight carrier winners. The shipping company operates one of the largest alternative fuel and advanced technology fleets in the country, with approximately 9,300 vehicles.
The shipper takes a rolling laboratory approach to its fleet by replacing vehicles with alternative fuel or advanced technology vehicles whenever possible, the company says. Their fleet includes all-electric, hybrid electric, hydraulic hybrid, ethanol, compressed natural gas, liquefied natural gas, and propane vehicles.
“We are honored to be recognized by the EPA for our accomplishments and look forward to continuing our work to create smarter and cleaner communities,” said Tamara Barker, chief sustainability officer, vice president of environmental affairs and domestic plant engineering at UPS.
