As you wait for packages to arrive on your doorstep this holiday season, you may want to consider just how busy mail carriers are.

The United Parcel Service is expected to deliver nearly 800 million packages this holiday season, an increase from its record-breaking season last year.

“We had to get a lot of extra packaging materials. We had to get a lot of extra boxes, just for all the packages that were coming in,” said Regina Legarreta, a customer service representative at a local UPS store.

During the 2019 peak holiday season, running Nov. 29 through Dec. 30, UPS expects to deliver an average of 32 million packages per day. That’s a 60% increase over the 20 million delivered on an average, non-peak day.

Aside from preparing year-round, UPS also hires nearly 100,000 seasonal employees. “We have people pick up extra shifts, and work to make sure everyone’s packages are delivered on time,” said Legarreta.

If you’re planning on delivering items to loved ones this holiday season or getting things shipped to your home, UPS has set shipping deadlines to make sure they arrive before the end of the month.

In order to save time before you drop off a package, Legarreta suggests you make a checklist to make sure you don’t forget anything. “Have all of your items ready. Make sure that you know the address it’s going to, the zip code, everything that comes with shipping and if you are packing your own package, make sure that it’s well packed,” said Legarreta. “The sooner you come in, the better because that’s the faster we can ship everything out.”

If you forget something, or don’t know how to package it correctly, Legarreta says not to worry. “If they need us to pack anything for them we can do all the packing and working for them.
