FedEx adding 2,600 in Memphis to handle peak season demand

By Wayne Risher - USA Today / / September 27th, 2017

FedEx will hire 2,600 people in Memphis to help meet peak season demand.

The Memphis hires will be among more than 50,000 additional employees needed company wide to move what's anticipated to be another record volume in November and December. Growth in e-commerce is fueling the higher volume.

The hires will include 1,000 at the FedEx Express world hub in Memphis and 1,600 at FedEx Ground facilities. More details are expected on Thursday.

The peak season hiring is part of an ongoing push to keep the Memphis hub fully staffed.

FedEx has held at least four job fairs seeking hub workers since January, billing the events as opportunities to fill anywhere from 600 to 1,000 jobs.

The company has attributed hiring pushes to the ebb and flow of staffing a round-the-clock FedEx Express hub that employs more than 10,000 and handles more than 1 million packages on an average night.

Rival UPS expects to hire about 95,000 for the holiday surge.

FedEx isn’t the only local company with lofty hiring goals for the holidays.

Radial, operator of a 900,000-square-foot warehouse at 5461 Davidson Road, has announced plans to hire 3,000.

Williams-Sonoma says it needs 2,000 seasonal workers for three Memphis-area distribution centers. - 24/7 Support including Chat
