Two Atlanta-area companies are operating Puerto Rico relief flights.
Sandy Springs-based UPS and Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines are each operating relief flights to Puerto Rico, bringing emergency supplies.
Delta operated its third humanitarian flight to San Juan, Puerto Rico on Friday, carrying 50 state troopers, 100 FEMA officials, electricians, workers to help remove debris and other relief workers, as well as 100 generators and other supplies.
Delta is also limiting the number of checked bags per passenger on regular commercial flights to San Juan to three, to allow more space for relief supplies. The baggage cap does not apply to passengers departing San Juan.
Until Oct. 16, the airline has capped its San Juan nonstop fares at $199 in the main cabin and $399 in first class, with connecting itineraries to the continental United States capped at $299 in the main cabin and $499 for first class.
The airline is also limiting passengers flying to St. Maarten and St. Thomas to two checked bags, and has capped Atlanta-St. Thomas fares until Oct. 9.
The partnership draws on the UPS logistics network to fly supplies from the shipping giant’s air hub in Louisville, Ky. A UPS plane carrying more than 60 pallets of water departed Tuesday morning, while two more plane loads will deliver 60 pallets of emergency supply kits for 60,000 people.
The emergency supply kits -- which include water purification tablets, water buckets, soap, toothpaste, detergent and other supplies -- will go to humanitarian supply distribution centers.
UPS Foundation president Eduardo Martinez in a written statement said “public-private partnerships like this create a critical foundation for getting aid and goods distributed as quickly as possible.”
UPS and UNICEF volunteers also recently delivered school supplies for the Houston Public School System after Hurricane Harvey.
